The Health & Safety Supervisor maintains a variety of occupational health and safety programs related to the safety of our employees and in compliance with applicable government regulations. It is the responsibility of the Health & Safety Supervisor to help identify hazardous workplace conditions, ensure compliance with applicable federal and state regulations and ensure necessary records are maintained in accordance with established guidelines. The Health & Safety Supervisor is responsible for initial medical treatment of injured employees and the management of the Workers’ Compensation claim that results. The Health & Safety Supervisor must be familiar with a variety of the field’s concepts, practices and procedures.

Employee Injuries/Illnesses: Assess employee injuries/illnesses and administer appropriate initial and follow up treatment. Make medical referrals as needed. Monitor treatment progress. Monitor cost effectiveness and quality of care.

Administrative Tasks: Document treatment, initiate and follow up on workers’ compensation claims. Initiate incident investigation process. Establish and maintain employee health records. Maintain OSHA 300 log and medical exposure records. Maintain and review records to ensure OSHA compliance. Enter and maintain incident report database (IndustrySafe). Ensure training and training documentation is maintained in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.


Administration of workers’ compensation: Serve as liaison with insurance carrier, health providers and company. Understand workers’ compensation law to be prepared to participate in workers’ compensation hearings and mediations. Maintain good working relationships with injured employee, medical providers, legal and workers’ compensation carrier.

 

Safety: Complete daily plant walkthroughs looking for potential hazards and ensuring compliance with safety rules and regulations. Manage Transitional Duty Program and supervise employees working Transitional Duty assignments. Provide First Aid/CPR/AED services as needed and provide training to designated employees. Assist with development, implementation and training for safety programs and projects. Provide safety orientation training to new employees. Ensure supervisory personnel are aware of employee restrictions due to work-related injury or illness. Ensure employees are working within those restrictions. Participate in incident investigation process. Maintain required inspection programs, such as fire extinguishers, safety showers, eyewash stations, ladders, AED, etc. Serves as Chairperson of Safety Committee.

 

Hearing Conservation, Respiratory Protection and Hazard Communication: Coordinate hearing tests and ensure hearing conservation training for appropriate employees. Provide follow-up testing and review of results as necessary. Ensure annual respiratory testing and training is completed. Coordinates and maintains the Hazard Communication Program, MSDS, container labeling, etc.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Carries out managerial/supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for direction, coordination and assigning Transitional Duty assignments to employees in accordance with work restrictions.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university in a safety or related technical field and three to five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Working knowledge of OSHA regulations and state workers’ compensation law and insurance procedures.

  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from individuals and/or groups of employees, supervisors and managers.

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, verbal or diagram form.

  • Current certification in First Aid/CPR/AED. Instructor certification desirable.

  • OSHA 40 hour
    Safety Certified

  • Good decision maker and ability to perform in stressful situations.

  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.

  • Good computer skills including Excel spreadsheets, word processing and use of the Internet.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Detail oriented.

  • Bilingual skills desirable: speak, read, write and address groups, individuals, conduct investigations, counseling, training, mentoring using language other than English.

  • Must be able to travel on an occasional basis.
